Life Style Report
by Tara Hanover
Do you ever feel like it’s really not necessary to wait for October to see something scary? What I mean is…you know those days when all it takes is the alarm clock to ring to make you angry. Then you stumble to the bathroom catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror along the way and yikes- not only are you mad, now you are scared too…at the image looking back at you.
I always try to be positive, happy and grateful for every day I am given but, why? Why are some mornings harder than others? Why are some days harder than others? Well, because unfortunately everything in the world is not happy. The news, politics, the angry stranger honking at you from behind because you stopped too long at the stop sign…for Pete’s sake, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
So I bet you’re wondering what I’m going to do about it? Well, I will tell you…Happiness is a choice and I am choosing happy! And you know what ol’ honest Abe always said:
“Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.”
Now wait a minute, before you Bah, Humbug Mr. Lincoln’s and my idea, I decided to go to a trusted source on this matter. My good friend, Linda, who is smart, beautiful, talented and for the entire 15 years that I have known her she has always been positive. She always sees the bigger picture and ALWAYS has a smile on her face. Oh, and did I mention you may know her too? I’ll bet she helps you wake up everyday, and I am sure she is smiling…its Linda Stouffer! The amazingly talented anchor on Channel 2 Action News “This Morning”. She has worked in the media her entire career and let’s face it, the news is rarely sunshine and rainbows (the weather, maybe, the news-not so much). Did I also mention she wakes up before 2am Monday thru Friday to make sure you and I know what in the world is going on. So, if anyone is an expert on choosing happiness, well, it MUST be her!
Tara: First things first. You wake up literally in the middle of the night, how in the world do you do that everyday?
Linda: Getting up is not hard- the afternoons are! I set three alarms, but usually get up with the first one. I enjoy what I do, and even as I drive down the interstate at 2am, I appreciate my surroundings. The Fed Ex trucks, the police…we are all in it together, as the city turns from night to day.
Tara: In an industry like the media, where most of the news that we hear is bad, how do you handle it? Day after day? Year after year?
Linda: Let’s face it, some days I meet people on the worst day of their lives. I am there with a job to do, but in the heat of the moment I often have to give myself a moment. I always try to stay in touch by remembering that we are all human, and honestly it gives me a daily dose of perspective. It helps me have gratitude with what is right in the world, and at the end of the day, PEOPLE ARE GOOD. There IS good in the world. I see the good people come together to help others in not so ideal situations.
I think everyone feels the stress of what’s happening in our country right now. No matter how you see all of this- we get blasted with angry posts, news alerts, or tricky conversations. I think what I try to do is focus on what’s right in the world- the love in my family. The trees! The sky! Whatever reminds me to take a deep breath and find the beauty and truth AGAIN. And believe it or not- it really does help to smile.
Tara: Speaking of beauty, you have not aged a day in all of the years I have known you. What is your secret? What are your go-to products?
Linda: I always use a Retina-A or retinol. I like that squeaky-clean feel it gives my skin! I also start the day with Kiehl’s Avocado eye cream. It works great under makeup. I always clean off all of my make-up, moisturize and use a night cream. And my secret weapon…an eyelash curler!
*Also, I know how to do my job (report the news), but I get to work with beauty professionals that know their job too.
Tara: What tips would you give our readers that don’t have a beauty pro with them every morning?
Linda: Ask for help. Enjoy trying something new and if you don’t like it, change it. But best of all, a smile! Look up from your phone, stand up straight and SMILE!
Tara: Thank you, Linda for your time, your friendship, and your words of encouragement and of course…your smile to help us all start our day off right!
